Carson Mansion- Eureka, California
The mansion is a mix of every major style of Victorian Architecture, including but not limited to the following styles: Eastlake, Italianate, Queen Anne (primary), and Stick, depending on which expert one consults.
I used to live about six blocks away from the Carson Mansion. It’s not open to the public, so I kept trying to wrangle an invitation to see the inside at some point, but that never panned out (though I was younger then—I’m a lot more persuasive & persistent these days). In some ways it’s atrocious—in terms of its pastiche of various styles & fussy ornamentation—but it’s undeniably historic as well as an important tourist attraction, & anything that bolsters the local economy receives my wholehearted support.
And speaking of the local economy, if you ever visit the Carson House, it’s just a few blocks over to Los Bagels, purveyors of excellent nosh; my former BFF & I used to have a standing date there every Wednesday morning, & I always got the garlic bagel with cream cheese—it caused me to breathe naught but green fumes for the next several hours, but it was totally worth it.
this is gaudy as all hell, i’m diggin it
